SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group - Rescheduled!
DESCRIPTION:We will finish up our discussion of Hannah Arendt’s The Human Condition\, covering Parts V and VI\, in which she discusses action and the modern age\, drawing her final conclusions concerning where we are now and the human condition as she perceives it. Have you come to different conclusions or have another interpretation of the human condition? Let’s hear it. Godly perspectives are welcome\, if a little suspect.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will continue our discussion of The Human Condition by Hannah Arendt by reading Parts III and IV. \nThis is not a difficult book to read\, but the arguments can be complex and even confusing. That\, however\, is no problem for us. We’re as complex and confused as any group out there. Come and help us unravel Arendt. And maybe even yourself.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will begin reading The Human Condition (1958) by Hannah Arendt. You can find a new paperback of this book for around $22 or an ebook for about $15. Since this is also one of Arendt’s more popular and influential books there should be some used copies around. For the 9th we will read through Parts I and II. \nHannah Arendt was a political philosopher who\, in this book\, attempted to take a very broad look at how life not only was lived\, but more importantly\, how it was thought of over the millennia. She has her own conclusions about how our Western society got to where it is today\, politically and socially\, and what this means for us\, collectively and individually. One conclusion\, however\, is clear. If you want a full\, satisfying\, robust life\, you need to attend the meetings of the MISF Philosophy Study Group. \n

DESCRIPTION:We will discuss a paper by Nancy Fraser\, “Social Movements vs. Disciplinary Bureaucracies: The Discourses of Social Needs” (1987) Center for Humanistic Studies Occasional Papers\, Number 8\, 3-37. For a copy of the paper\, click here. \nAlso\, we are\, actively looking for a good location to start in-person meetings again. If you know of a centrally located place that you think would work for us\, contact me. But even when we find one\, we plan on continuing Zoom meetings if there is enough interest.\n \nWhile on the MISF website\, feel free to join (if you’re not already a member of MISF)\, contribute\, and/or volunteer. DESCRIPTION:For this meeting we are going to begin a discussion about distributive justice. First\, we’ll do an overview. Both the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy and the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy have articles on distributive justice. You can read either one or both of them for our next meeting. After that\, we’ll decide together what direction we want to go. We want to be just here and not distribute disreputably. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We plan to conclude our discussion of A History of Philosophy in the Twentieth Century by Christian Delacampagne. \nEarly in my study of philosophy I was told that if you really want to understand a philosopher\, you need to understand who or what he or she is responding to. Delacampagne provides this in spades\, sometimes to the detriment of the philosophers he is covering. But he gives you a great feeling for the disputes that were going on at the time. And when you reach the end of the book you should have a good sense of what was happening in Western philosophy during the twentieth century\, though not necessarily of the details of the philosophies themselves – certainly not in a book this short. The MISF Philosophy Study Group can also give you a good sense of something: that of what other people think about the things that we are reading about. Perhaps we can even knock a little sense into your own views. \n

DESCRIPTION:We will continue reading A History of Philosophy in the Twentieth Century by Christian Delacampagne. For the 8th we will discuss chapters 2 and 3\, in which the author covers the development of Western philosophy during the rise of Hitler and the Second World War. Interestingly\, this seems to have influenced some philosophers.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will begin reading A History of Philosophy in the Twentieth Century (2001) by Christian Delacampagne. The paperback version retails for around $28 ($23 on Amazon)\, but there are used books available for less. There is no ebook edition for this title. For the 11th we will read through Part I. \nWhat is unique about this book is that it self-consciously considers the political influences at play in the development of the philosophical positions taken by twentieth century philosophers\, claiming that “[p]hilosophy is essentially a political activity.” Whether you agree with that or not after finishing the book is\, of course\, an open question. Maybe we’ll vote on it.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Note that April 11 is not the second Wednesday of the month\, the time we have been meeting recently. We will finish discussing the book\, Philosophy in the Flesh: the Embodied Mind & Its Challenge to Western Thought\, by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. \nThis is a long book and we hope that you have been able to read as much of it as possible. If you find that you are unable to read the whole thing\, feel free to explore what interests you the most and browse the other areas for useful tidbits. \nWe do have a couple of suggestions\, however. One person who has already read the book suggests that you read the last chapter (Chapter 25) first. And you should also have read all of Part I\, since this is the foundation of the authors’ arguments. Also try to read as much of Part II as you can\, since this fills in and gives many examples of what the authors are driving at. Part III takes aim at particular philosophers and philosophical schools. Most reviewers have found this the weakest part of the book\, with the exception of the chapter on Noam Chomsky and cognitive linguistics. This is not a great surprise\, since the authors come from the language side of cognitive research\, and Lakoff\, a former student of Chomsky\, has been debating this topic with Chomsky for a long time. We hope to do a bit of debating ourselves: if not about cognitive linguistics itself\, then about some of the other topics alluded to in this book\, such as causality\, cognition in general\, theories of mind\, time\, ontology\, psychology\, classical philosophy\, epistemology\, experimental philosophy\, morality\, metaphysics\, space\, linguistics in general\, early modern philosophy\, objective reality\, analytic philosophy\, religion\, science\, and yesterday’s weather.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will continue with the book\, Philosophy in the Flesh: the Embodied Mind & Its Challenge to Western Thought\, by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. This is a long book and the group has decided that they do not want to spend more than one or two additional sessions on it. So\, for our March meeting we will tackle Part II\, and for April\, if we still want to discuss the book\, we’ll do Parts III and IV. \nFirst\, however\, it’s important to finish reading Part I\, since this covers the arguments that the authors use as their basic critique in the rest of the book. Then you can start on Part II. Unfortunately\, Part II is about 200 pages long\, and this is far more than we expect you to tackle for one session. (Note that\, as far as philosophical texts go\, this is not difficult reading – just long.) So instead\, we encourage you to choose what you find most interesting or important in Part II and read that. Or you can graze\, picking up interesting items that you can use as you move through the section. One thing this book has demonstrated so far is that it is capable of generating a lot of discussion. And that’s probably the one thing that philosophers are consistently really good at. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will begin a discussion of the book\, Philosophy in the Flesh: the Embodied Mind & Its Challenge to Western Thought (1999)\, by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. \nFor the 9th we have a little different reading assignment: Read as much as you can of Part I\, but at least the first four chapters. This is a big book and we’d like to get through as much as we can before people start wanting to go on to something different. \nThe book can be purchased for $7\, including shipping\, from Abe Books. The authors\, both cognitive linguists\, examine recent research on cognition and claim that many of the major conclusions of classical philosophers are based on assumptions that are wrong\, which probably include some of our own. But here’s an assumption you can bank on: If you attend our meetings\, you will be able to engage in stimulating conversations. You can’t assume\, however\, that we have all the answers. But we do have some of them. And I assume that some of those might even be right.

In the second half of the book Hume talks about free will and critiques miracles\, among other topics. These things are still quite controversial and often ruffle feathers even 300 years later. SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We are tackling one of the classics for this meeting: David Hume and his An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. Published in 1748\, it has profoundly influenced epistemological studies to this day. For the eighth\, we’ll discuss the first half\, through Section VII. \nSince it is a classic and no longer in copyright\, it can be downloaded for free from the internet from several sites\, both in print and as an audio book. This includes Project Gutenberg\, where it is available in several formats. If you do wish to purchase your own copy\, you can find it for anywhere from a few dollars to almost fifty\, depending on how much extra commentary you would like. Or you can wait until our meeting and we’ll commentary you until you can’t stand it anymore. \n

DESCRIPTION:Another epistemological classic is on the agenda for this meeting – the first and one that philosophers have had to address in one way or another for twenty-four centuries: Plato’s dialogue Theaetetus. You may already have this in your library. If not\, it is readily available for free online. Try gutenberg.org for several formatting options. \nThe MISF Philosophy Study Group itself has been around for more than a third of a century\, so we should have no trouble with this.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Zoom Link \nFor this meeting we will spend our time discussing Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous by George Berkeley. First published in 1713\, it has become a part of the traditional epistemological oeuvre. \nIt is no longer in copyright and is readily available\, both as a new book (usually with commentary) or used or for free online. With respect to the latter\, your best bet is probably Gutenberg.org where it is available in several formats. This book is relatively short and not difficult to read\, so we will only spend one session on it. \nThis book is the good Bishop Berkeley’s response to what he saw as the materialism of empiricists like John Locke. While no other philosopher ever endorsed his position\, he is admired for his logical and coherent arguments which have made the book a classic. We will have our own dialogue about Berkeley’s Dialogues and hope to be as logical and coherent as he was. Unfortunately\, in spite of repeated attempts\, we were unable to reach either Hylas or Philonous\, so neither will be in attendance.

For this meeting we will read the first three chapters\, which cover the history of epistemology into the 20th century. \nPeople have been challenging each other on why they know something for millenia. We will do the same. And by totally eliminating food fights\, meeting on Zoom is actually more safe to do this. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will be discussing a book by Victor Frankl\, a Holocaust survivor and author of the noted book\, Man’s Search for Meaning. This new book\, Say Yes to Life: In Spite of Everything (2020)\, is based on a series of lectures that Frankl gave less than a year after being liberated from a German concentration camp. \nHe then condensed the lectures into a book in 1946\, but it was not published in English until recently. Still\, it is easy to find and not expensive\, costing around $12 in paperback and $10 as an ebook. Since it is short and easy to read\, we will cover the entire book for our meeting on the 12th. If you do attend you can also say Yes to the MISF Philosophy Study Group\, in spite of everything we do in trying to tell you your ideas are dead wrong and ours are right.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe will conclude our discussion of the book\, The Perennial Philosophy\, by Aldous Huxley. At this meeting we will be looking for immanent arguments and comments\, the sort that can transcend the beings offering them and become theses that anchor themselves absolutely in the ground of elucidation.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:For this meeting we will begin reading Aldous Huxley’s book\, The Perennial Philosophy\, which proved to be very popular when it was first published in 1945 and remains so in some quarters today. For the 10th we will read through chapter VII. \nYou can purchase a new paperback for between $15 and $20 or an ebook for around $9. You might also be able to find a used copy. Huxley was interested in mysticism and this book is his attempt to understand what he felt was a common underlying truth in all the world’s religions. If Huxley proves to be persuasive\, I think we could start our own cult. We can call it the Secret Society for the Ancient and Esoteric Wisdom of the MISF Philosophy Study Group. Catchy.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will begin a discussion of Aristotle’s Children: How Christians\, Muslims\, and Jews Rediscovered Ancient Wisdom and Illuminated the Middle Ages (2004) by Richard E. Rubenstein. \nThis book can be had for under $20 in paperback and for about $15 as an ebook. We will read the first four chapters. (This is a bit ambitious\, but do the best you  can.). A history book as much as a philosophy book\, it should provide a different perspective on Aristotelian philosophy. Several different perspectives\, even. And when multiplied by the perspectives of our participants\, we will be swimming in perspectives. Perspectives are good.

DESCRIPTION:For this meeting we have chosen a book that was very popular some years ago and has managed to retain its popularity. The book is Why Bad Things Happen to Good People (1981) by Harold Kushner\, in which the author\, a Jewish rabbi\, tackles the problem of evil. \nThis book should be widely available\, new or used\, at less than $15. An ebook costs about $12. You are welcome to join this discussion even if nothing bad has ever happened to you. As a matter of fact\, if that is the case\, we are especially interested in meeting you. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled (to be rescheduled)\nWe will begin a discussion of the book\, The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness (revised second edition\, 1998) by Simon Wiesenthal. This book consists of a story of a German soldier asking forgiveness from the author – a Jew – for an atrocity the soldier had committed. At the time of the request\, Wiesenthal was an inmate in a World War II concentration camp. \nAfter relating the story\, Wiesenthal then presents analyses by several dozen people – clerics\, authors\, politicians\, journalists\, and others – whom he had asked to comment. Should this soldier be forgiven\, and why or why not? When this book first came out in the 70’s it became popular among some groups to provoke discussions. It has lost none of its power since then. It is available in paperback for around $12-15\, and as an ebook for about $10. (Note that later editions and revisions of the book added more commentators. If you happen to have or get an earlier edition\, it will not have as many. While this does not\, of course\, mean that you should not use it\, it is just something to be aware of.) For the 30th we will read the first fifteen chapters. Personally\, I think that our group should well positioned to be able to provide a robust analysis of this book\, if you’ll forgive me for saying so.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Because this is an election year\, we have decided to read what many say is the first modern political treatise: The Prince\, written in the early 16th century by Niccolò Machiavelli. Being a classic\, this book is readily available just about anywhere at a reasonable cost\, and may even be in your own library. \nA downloadable copy can be found on Gutenberg.org. There is nothing Machiavellian about the MISF Philosophy Study Group. However\, anyone even thinking about attempting some kind of power move is not treated kindly.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group (Rescheduled!)
DESCRIPTION:For this meeting we have chosen to read a philosophical novel rather than our usual diet of books and articles by philosophers. The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade (1857) was the last novel written by Herman Melville. A paperback copy of the book can be found for $6 – $14 new and less if used. An ebook costs only a few dollars. But best of all\, it is available on the Gutenberg Project for free. \nThe story is ostensibly about a con man who takes a steamboat down the Mississippi\, interacting with his marks; but\, of course\, it is much more than that. Just what else it is about is to be discovered at our next meeting. So be prepared to be enlightened\, challenged\, inspired\, amused\, and perhaps…fooled? Bring money.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will conclude our discussion of The Parallax View by Slavoj Žižek. This involves reading Part III in which Žižek covers how his philosophy works with politics. Žižek is one of the leading contemporary philosophers of Continental Philosophy (as contrasted with Analytic Philosophy). As a matter of fact\, in one place he says that his goal is to resurrect German Idealism. He\, like most Continental Philosophers\, can also sometimes be difficult to read; but this is one reason we have these discussions: to share our insights into what the author is trying to say. \nSince the different schools of Continental Philosophy are a wide-ranging and important part of contemporary philosophy and should be at least broadly understood by anyone who asserts that they are interested in philosophy\, and that\, furthermore\, we have given you a whole month to read as much as the book (or other works by or about Žižek) as you are able\, therefore\, we are making it a requirement that everyone attend this meeting. We expect full compliance.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will continue discussing The Parallax View by Slavoj Žižek\, this time covering Part II. In this part Žižek applies his parallax metaphor to science. Reviewers\, in general\, think that Žižek does his best job in Part II where he contributes new insights for Continental Philosophy. Notably\, these reviewers – including those who are Žižek enthusiasts ‒ also generally agree that chapter1 is really tough going. So if you got through that\, the rest is smooth sailing. \nWell…smoother\, anyway. But what’s really smooth sailing is coming to our meeting and basking in the friendly philosophical banter of our members.
