SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will conclude our discussion of the book Beauty: A Very Short Introduction by Roger Scruton. In the last half of this book\, the author examines what is sometimes termed “serious art.” This is quite fitting for us\, since our meetings always involve what is sometimes termed “serious perlustration\,” sometimes with dialectic excurses.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We are tackling one of the classics for this meeting: David Hume and his An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. Published in 1748\, it has profoundly influenced epistemological studies to this day. For the eighth\, we’ll discuss the first half\, through Section VII. \nSince it is a classic and no longer in copyright\, it can be downloaded for free from the internet from several sites\, both in print and as an audio book. This includes Project Gutenberg\, where it is available in several formats. If you do wish to purchase your own copy\, you can find it for anywhere from a few dollars to almost fifty\, depending on how much extra commentary you would like. Or you can wait until our meeting and we’ll commentary you until you can’t stand it anymore. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will finish discussing David Hume’s classic\, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. In the second half of the book Hume talks about free will and critiques miracles\, among other topics. These things are still quite controversial and often ruffle feathers even 300 years later. And we intend to do just that. At least we will if we so choose. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will begin a discussion of the book\, Philosophy in the Flesh: the Embodied Mind & Its Challenge to Western Thought (1999)\, by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. \nFor the 9th we have a little different reading assignment: Read as much as you can of Part I\, but at least the first four chapters. This is a big book and we’d like to get through as much as we can before people start wanting to go on to something different. \nThe book can be purchased for $7\, including shipping\, from Abe Books. The authors\, both cognitive linguists\, examine recent research on cognition and claim that many of the major conclusions of classical philosophers are based on assumptions that are wrong\, which probably include some of our own. But here’s an assumption you can bank on: If you attend our meetings\, you will be able to engage in stimulating conversations. You can’t assume\, however\, that we have all the answers. But we do have some of them. And I assume that some of those might even be right.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will continue with the book\, Philosophy in the Flesh: the Embodied Mind & Its Challenge to Western Thought\, by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. This is a long book and the group has decided that they do not want to spend more than one or two additional sessions on it. So\, for our March meeting we will tackle Part II\, and for April\, if we still want to discuss the book\, we’ll do Parts III and IV. \nFirst\, however\, it’s important to finish reading Part I\, since this covers the arguments that the authors use as their basic critique in the rest of the book. Then you can start on Part II. Unfortunately\, Part II is about 200 pages long\, and this is far more than we expect you to tackle for one session. (Note that\, as far as philosophical texts go\, this is not difficult reading – just long.) So instead\, we encourage you to choose what you find most interesting or important in Part II and read that. Or you can graze\, picking up interesting items that you can use as you move through the section. One thing this book has demonstrated so far is that it is capable of generating a lot of discussion. And that’s probably the one thing that philosophers are consistently really good at. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Note that April 11 is not the second Wednesday of the month\, the time we have been meeting recently. We will finish discussing the book\, Philosophy in the Flesh: the Embodied Mind & Its Challenge to Western Thought\, by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. \nThis is a long book and we hope that you have been able to read as much of it as possible. If you find that you are unable to read the whole thing\, feel free to explore what interests you the most and browse the other areas for useful tidbits. \nWe do have a couple of suggestions\, however. One person who has already read the book suggests that you read the last chapter (Chapter 25) first. And you should also have read all of Part I\, since this is the foundation of the authors’ arguments. Also try to read as much of Part II as you can\, since this fills in and gives many examples of what the authors are driving at. Part III takes aim at particular philosophers and philosophical schools. Most reviewers have found this the weakest part of the book\, with the exception of the chapter on Noam Chomsky and cognitive linguistics. This is not a great surprise\, since the authors come from the language side of cognitive research\, and Lakoff\, a former student of Chomsky\, has been debating this topic with Chomsky for a long time. We hope to do a bit of debating ourselves: if not about cognitive linguistics itself\, then about some of the other topics alluded to in this book\, such as causality\, cognition in general\, theories of mind\, time\, ontology\, psychology\, classical philosophy\, epistemology\, experimental philosophy\, morality\, metaphysics\, space\, linguistics in general\, early modern philosophy\, objective reality\, analytic philosophy\, religion\, science\, and yesterday’s weather.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will begin reading A History of Philosophy in the Twentieth Century (2001) by Christian Delacampagne. The paperback version retails for around $28 ($23 on Amazon)\, but there are used books available for less. There is no ebook edition for this title. For the 11th we will read through Part I. \nWhat is unique about this book is that it self-consciously considers the political influences at play in the development of the philosophical positions taken by twentieth century philosophers\, claiming that “[p]hilosophy is essentially a political activity.” Whether you agree with that or not after finishing the book is\, of course\, an open question. Maybe we’ll vote on it.

DESCRIPTION:We will continue reading A History of Philosophy in the Twentieth Century by Christian Delacampagne. For the 8th we will discuss chapters 2 and 3\, in which the author covers the development of Western philosophy during the rise of Hitler and the Second World War. Interestingly\, this seems to have influenced some philosophers.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We plan to conclude our discussion of A History of Philosophy in the Twentieth Century by Christian Delacampagne. \nEarly in my study of philosophy I was told that if you really want to understand a philosopher\, you need to understand who or what he or she is responding to. Delacampagne provides this in spades\, sometimes to the detriment of the philosophers he is covering. But he gives you a great feeling for the disputes that were going on at the time. And when you reach the end of the book you should have a good sense of what was happening in Western philosophy during the twentieth century\, though not necessarily of the details of the philosophies themselves – certainly not in a book this short. The MISF Philosophy Study Group can also give you a good sense of something: that of what other people think about the things that we are reading about. Perhaps we can even knock a little sense into your own views. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will begin reading The Human Condition (1958) by Hannah Arendt. You can find a new paperback of this book for around $22 or an ebook for about $15. Since this is also one of Arendt’s more popular and influential books there should be some used copies around. For the 9th we will read through Parts I and II. \nHannah Arendt was a political philosopher who\, in this book\, attempted to take a very broad look at how life not only was lived\, but more importantly\, how it was thought of over the millennia. She has her own conclusions about how our Western society got to where it is today\, politically and socially\, and what this means for us\, collectively and individually. One conclusion\, however\, is clear. If you want a full\, satisfying\, robust life\, you need to attend the meetings of the MISF Philosophy Study Group. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group - Rescheduled!
DESCRIPTION:We will finish up our discussion of Hannah Arendt’s The Human Condition\, covering Parts V and VI\, in which she discusses action and the modern age\, drawing her final conclusions concerning where we are now and the human condition as she perceives it. Have you come to different conclusions or have another interpretation of the human condition? Let’s hear it. Godly perspectives are welcome\, if a little suspect.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:For this meeting\, rather than a book or other reading\, we are going to assign a topic. The topic is Punishment. Both this meeting and our one in March will be in conjunction with the monthly general meeting of the Minnesota Independent Scholars Forum on March 25 in which one of our members will present a program on restorative justice. \nSo for the 8th\, you can chose whatever reading you wish on the topic to share with the rest of the group. Below are some suggested readings from our members. \n  \nFrom the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy:\nLegal Punishment\nRetributive Justice\nSkepticism About Moral Responsibility \nFrom the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy:\nPunishment\nMoral Permissibility of Punishment \nSome books and articles:\nThe Death of Punishment: Searching for Justice among the Worst of the Worst (Robert Blecker)\nDiscipline & Punish: The Birth of the Prison (Michel Foucault)\nJustice and Punishment (Immanuel Kant)\nUtilitarianism (John Stuart Mill) \nThe history of punishment\, which is a fascinating topic in itself\, is not without relevance here. You may have to discipline yourself in order to get the job done.

DESCRIPTION:We will read and discuss the Little Book of Restorative Justice (2015) by Howard Zehr. This is an inexpensive (less than $10)\, short book that we will cover in a single session. It is in conjunction with the following program on March 25\, in which Jean Greenwood\, one of our members\, will give a presentation on restorative justice. \nAttending our meeting on the 8th does not require you to come on the 25th. However\, participating in this discussion should get you sufficiently excited about going. If not\, it raises serious questions about your commitment to philosophy\, to the MISF Philosophy Study Group\, and to making the world a more just place. And if that doesn’t make you feel guilty enough\, it might also hurt my feelings.

DESCRIPTION:We will begin a discussion of the book When They Severed Earth from Sky: How the Human Mind Shapes Myth (2004) by Elizabeth Wayland Barber and Paul T. Barber. For the 12th we’ll read the first ten chapters. This is a book about how myth operates in preliterate societies by taking advantage of aspects of the human mind that we are just beginning to learn about. Joseph Campbell it is not. \nUnfortunately\, this is not an inexpensive book\, though it’s still not like buying a textbook. A new paperback lists for $35 and even an ebook starts at $20. We’re going with it anyway\, since inflation has recently driven prices of many commodities significantly higher and we do our best to stay current. SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:First\, please note that this time is different than our usual second Wednesday of the month schedule. For this session\, we will begin the book\, The Case Against Reality: How Evolution Hid the Truth from our Eyes (2019) by Donald Hoffman. This book is available in paperback for less than $20 new and can be had as an ebook for about $10. For the 22nd we’ll read through chapter 4. \nWhile the book is primarily an examination of the mystery of consciousness\, it goes beyond that\, bringing in ideas from other fields to structure a radical\, but plausible\, theory of perception. Is what you see what there is? Not necessarily. Virtual reality? Intriguing. Note\, however\, that even if our meetings are really totally different from what you think they are\, don’t expect any refunds.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will conclude our reading of The Case Against Reality: How Evolution Hid the Truth from our Eyes by Donald Hoffman. People have reacted very differently to the thesis that Hoffman presents in this book. \nSome think that he has opened an insight into reality that will revolutionize our study of physics and other areas of human existence. Others think that he’s gone off the rails into a mystical pseudoscience using sloppy logic. \nThere is abundant evidence that our group contains both of these viewpoints as well as positions in between. This should be interesting. \n

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We are going to start reading a new book: Corruptible (2021) by Brian Klass. This book is about power and why those who abuse it so often have it. Does power really corrupt? Or is it that corrupt people seek power? Or is it because of badly designed systems? \nWhatever the conclusions are\, this is the book that has been chosen for discussion. And I can assure you that any effort to replace this book with another will result in something unpleasant. If we don’t know where you are\, we have ways of finding out. \nCurt

DESCRIPTION:We will conclude our discussion of Aristotle’s Way: How Ancient Wisdom Can Change Your Life by Edith Hall. After having read this book\, it won’t matter if you’ve been adhering to the Ten Commandments\, the Noble Eightfold Path\, the Five Pillars\, or the Three Fundamental Bonds and Five Constant Virtues\, or have just been working to improve your Karma\, or maybe indulging in ritual purification. \nIt will now be necessary for you to add Aristotle’s Golden Mean. And then\, to top it off with the ultimate\, the consummate\, the perfected\, the pièce de résistance: the consensus of the MISF Philosophy Study Group on how you should live your life. But for that\, you need to show up.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe will finish discussing the book Thought: A Very Short Introduction by Tim Bayne. A short introductory book on a broad topic can lead to some interesting disagreements with what the author covers and how he goes about it. \nAdded to this is the fact that\, at this point\, we know very little about thought or how the brain works except in mostly general terms. This can lead to some interesting discussions. If you’re as confused as everyone else but have lots of opinions anyway\, you should come and join the rest of us who are in the same boat. Maybe we can get enough people rowing in the same direction that we can get somewhere. Hopefully not smashed into the dock. \nCurt

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Note that this is the third Wednesday of the month\, not the second Wednesday\, our usual meeting day. We are starting a new book\, An Aristotelian Account of Induction: Creating Something from Nothing by Louis Groarke\, part of the McGill-Queen’s Studies in the History of Ideas. \nA new paperback will cost you around $38 and there is no ebook. For our first meeting we will discuss chapters 1 and 2. \nSince it might be a little harder than usual to get a copy of this book\, you might end up waiting. If so\, and since the first two chapters are largely an introduction and a discussion of the historical background\, we have listed some alternative readings below that you can do while you’re waiting. However\, most commentaries talk about “the problem of induction\,” and the thesis of this book is that it’s a problem largely because we have strayed from what Aristotle understood as induction. So\, if you follow this route\, you should also read something about induction according to Aristotle\, which\, unfortunately\, is a little harder to find\, so we have included some articles by a philosopher who is sympathetic to Groarke’s thesis. While we would prefer that you read both chapters of Groarke\, we are giving you the option of skipping chapter 2 altogether if you would prefer to read these or some other sources. \nThis topic reaches into the very heart of philosophy. Every self-respecting member of this group should be so excited to get started on this book that it has given us some concern about how an over-reaction could effect your mental health. So just relax\, get a grip on yourself\, and dig in. \nCurt \nSuggested online articles on philosophical induction. \nThis is a short discussion of general philosophical induction\, not including Aristotle \nhttps://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Induction_(philosophy) \nWikipedia has a general article on philosophical induction\, but Aristotle is only briefly mentioned. \nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inductive_reasoning \nThis is a longer\, more detailed article on philosophical (and other types of) induction. Aristotle’s induction is discussed in a section on “historical genesis.” \nhttps://www.encyclopedia.com/science-and-technology/computers-and-electr… \nIf you really want to understand the problem of induction\, these two articles are long\, detailed\, and technical. \nhttps://plato.stanford.edu/entries/induction-problem/ \nhttps://iep.utm.edu/problem-of-induction/ \nThe following articles are about Aristotelian induction\, courtesy of Milo Schield\, a member of our group who suggested the book. DESCRIPTION:For this meeting we will discuss the topic of “Power and Discourse” by reading three short and very accessible articles which can be found online. \nPowercube \n        https://www.powercube.net/analyse-power/ \n Okay\, this is not really an article\, but it serves the purpose of a good introduction to non-coercive power. Go down to the bottom of the list under “In this\nsection” and click on “Other approaches to power” and read the series of pages that follow. \nMichel Foucault: Discourse \nRachel Adams \nhttps://criticallegalthinking.com/2017/11/17/michel-foucault-discourse/ \nA very short\, very good explanation of one of Foucault’s basic ideas. \nDiscourse\, Power and Symbolic Elites \nTeun A. van Dijk \nhttps://discourses.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Teun-A.-van-Dijk-2012-Discourse-power-and-symbolic-elites.pdf \nPublished by Barcelona Metropolis Magazine\, 2010\, under a Creative Commons license. That means we can use it. \nYou may\, of course\, read whatever else you choose on the topic\, as well as use your knowledge of the subject in general. The only thing you’re not allowed to do is use any of your skill with non-coercive power to manipulate the group. That’s the exclusive prerogative of the organizer.
