SUMMARY:History Study Group
DESCRIPTION:The book we will start discussing next is 1453: The Holy War for Constantinople and the Clash of Islam and the West (2006) by Roger Crowley. This book can be had in paperback for less than $14 (Amazon is listing it for only $7) and as an ebook for $10. \nIt is also available for free on erenow.com. Read the first eight chapters for the 19th. The fall of Constantinople is one of the great turning points in history and it has important consequences for today’s world\, from tensions between the Islamic East and the Christian West to a catchier consequence from its rebranding.

SUMMARY:F. Scott Fitzgerald in Minnesota
DESCRIPTION:F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul on 24 September 1896. Although his family left for Buffalo\, New York\, before his second birthday\, he returned to St. Paul in 1908 and lived there during his teen years\, a very formative period for the young writer. Come hear how the wealth of the Midwest\, the Catholic Church of St. Paul\, and the romantic notions of the Civil War his Maryland father planted in his head while living in St. Paul influenced F. Scott Fitzgerald’s life and writing. In addition\, take a slide show tour of some of the sites associated with Fitzgerald in St. Paul and nearby cities. \nDave Page has been involved in the publication of five books about F. Scott Fitzgerald\, either as an editor or a writer\, including this year’s F. Scott Fitzgerald in Minnesota: The Writer and His Friends at Home. A retired English instructor at Inver Hills Community College\, Page also co-chaired the 2002 International Fitzgerald conference and was a member of the 2017 International Fitzgerald Conference planning committee. He has lectured on Fitzgerald around the world and is currently working on a book about Fitzgerald and the Midwest.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Study Group
DESCRIPTION:We will be starting a new book for this meeting: Ethics in the Real World: 82 Brief Essays on Things that Matter (2016) by Peter Singer. This book can be purchased in paperback for around $15 and as an ebook for around $10. \nSinger is a bit controversial because of some of his positions\, particularly concerning animal rights. In his new book he addresses this and other ethical questions that come up in ordinary life. It is the sort of book that we can jump around in depending on people’s interest. For the 24th we’ll read the Introduction and the Big Questions section.
