There has been much talk recently of “political bubbles,” where people reinforce their own biases by talking only with those who agree with them, increasing the polarization we already have in this country. But there is another kind of bubble that is usually ignored: one that starts with what we are taught in school and reaches into the very stories we tell about ourselves as Americans.
Our next book will address this kind of bubble. It is History Lessons: How Textbooks from Around the World Portray U.S. History (2006) by Dana Lindaman and Kyle Ward. A new paperback version of this book is about $20 and an ebook runs $11 - $15. For the first meeting we will read Parts I - IV. The promotional materials for this book use words like “hilarious” and “sobering.” That's us!
