Before our Covid-19 delay, we were in the process of reading the book, The Swerve (2012), by Stephen Greenblatt. This book won many awards, including both a Pulitzer and a National Book award. Even its critics praised the book as a well-written, important addition to the genre of the beginnings of the Renaissance.
However, some historians felt it over-simplified the causes of the Renaissance, and some clerics decried it as anti-Christian. The MISF History Study Group does not take a position on any of these issues. It does, though, feel that attending a meeting without reading at least a fair amount of the book, while by no means forbidden, is a bit naughty.
